In contrast to sharks and rays (Elasmobranchii), chimaera fish (Holocephali) exhibit large pairs of permanent, constantly growing tooth plates (Elasmobranchii + Holocephali = Chondrichthyes). We study the structural reinforcements that maintain chimaera fish tooth plates' functionality despite constant wear.
