Fossil Brachiopod

Going back in time with computed tomography (3D)

We applied computed tomography to investigate the diversity of the ancient marine fauna. Through this non-invasive scanning technique we revealed species-specific morphological characters in millions of years old brachiopod shells. A part of this study is published on an awarded poster in the Museum of Natural History Berlin, Germany, which was also a proof of concept using computer tomography for taxonomic and phylogenetic analysis of fossilized animals instead of destructive serial sections.
